One of the simply “accepted” components of traditional pharmaceutical therapies, is that not only is the therapeutic molecule fixed, but the dosage is as well. Yet we can get our suits tailored, shirts custom fitted, iPhone cases (and phones for that matter) customized to our liking, car seats that couture to our bodies, and contact lenses perfectly fitted to our corneas. I even have hockey skates that custom mold themselves to my feet so they feel as comfortable as slippers to me and only me. Regardless of the degree to which we can customize these things, we can only get specific pre-determined dosages of a drug, regardless of our body’s metabolism.
We are told to take one pill ever 24 hours, (80mg or 160mg), and if it is a liquid, we are told to take dosages in measures of tablespoons. Richie isn’t even sure which spoons are the tablespoons #TRUESTORY.
It comes as no surprise that we see and hear a raging uproar that drugs are doing more “bad”than they are doing good. That we are overmedicated and over-vaccinated. Dangerous ideas to be certain in the absence of real scientific data, yet an understandable backlash if one considers how disconnected most patients are from their own care.
With sensors that can measure metabolism, and sensors measuring health KPIs we are going to be able to precisely prescribe dosage, and administration time and method; down to exact levels. When cure is needed, even if the drug remains broad spectrum, we can file the 80mg pill (with a rasping iron if necessary) down to 65mg because we’ll now have data that tells us that 65mg is all our body really needs.
As we become better quantified, we’ll have more granular, “personal” health care, based on actionable data. We’ll create truly personalized medicine. While there are dozens of innovative companies and people working to create individual facets of this future, the Human API will become a central hub of information, ideas, and services. A marketplace to connect all those innovative methods with the consumers that need them.
